Shit Robot - Where It's At (Digital)

$1.99

Shit Robot and DFA are psyched to release “Where It’s At” another in a long-running series of collaborations with the singer/comedian/television star Reggie Watts. Reggie Watts’ vocal performance runs the gamut of Chicago dance music history - from the gloom and melodrama of iconic label Wax Trax, to the jubilant choruses of Frankie Knuckles’ house anthems. But let’s not de-emphasize the solid instrumentation provided by Mr. Marcus ‘Shit Robot’ Lambkin – we’ve got that classic DFA bassline, claps, and bleeps and bloops aplenty – mixed and manipulated by none other than our own James Murphy. The flip features a remix by London producer Johnny Aux, who turns the track into a staticy, stripped down, raw Deep House banger, with hissing glimmers of icy cymbals peeking through the smog.

Prinzhorn Dance School - Shit Robot & Optimo (Espacio) Remixes

$10.99

PREORDER ITEM SHIPS MAY 12THish. YOU'LL GET THE DIGITAL THEN TOO. Hand numbered and stamped at the DFA office.

Prinzhorn Dance School’s spartan sonics have often lead to some hand-wringing when trying to play out their records ‘in the club’. In the first 7 years of their existance, there was a sole club-friendly remix in their entire catalog. It is for these reasons that we’re really stoked to announce that we now have a second.

DFA veteran Shit Robot takes the track “Reign” from their imminently released third album “Home Economics” and turns it into a deep, dark floor-filler. The band’s pleading vocals dive in and out of a throbbing bassline, with new robotic percussion seamlessly blending with the band’s original bangs and clangs.

The flip features that previously alluded to Optimo (Espaco) mix of You Are The Space Invader - previously only available commercially in digital form, this is the
first (slightly) wider vinyl release of this classic remix. An edition of 500 hand-stamped and numbered white label copies, not to be pressed again for another 7 years or so. Probably.

Tracklist:

  1. Reign (Shit Robot Remix)
  2. You Are The Space Invader (An Optimo (Espacio) Remix)

The tape is a preorder - we're copying 'em next week. It's an edition of 75. Stay tuned.

“Do It (Right)” is the newest single to get released from Shit Robot’s second LP ‘We Got A Love’. The single features hip house music legend Lidell Townsell on vocals. Townsell is best known for his ubiquitous crossover club hits “Nu Nu” and “Get With You” from 1992, as well as many 12” singles on legendary Chicago house label Trax Records.

The remixes for the single come courtesy of BareSkin (Hypercolour) & Glasgow’s Lord of the Isles. Also included in the remix package is a fittingly retro and soulful rework of the original song by Lidell Townsell himself, adding an extra layer of Chicago warmth and depth that can only come from a performer and producer who has been in the dance world as long as he has.

Recorded in Germany and New York, ‘We Got A Love’ LP features an array of guests, including Reggie Watts, Nancy Whang, Museum of Love, and Luke Jenner.

$2.99

The creative partnership of Marcus Lambkin aka Shit Robot & Reggie Watts yielded "We Got A Love”  one of the wonkiest house singles DFA has released. When we asked DFA remixing alumni Paul Woolford to have a crack at the tune, we had no idea Paul & his Special Delivery project would take off in such a major way.  Either way, he strips and flips the rubbery soul of it into something leaner -   and does very nuanced work  to a special track.  Both the vocal and dub are worth trying out, perhaps back to back?

Shit Robot - Feels Real (Feat JENR) (Digital)

$1.99

The Hi-NRG history of Luke Jenner’s hometown San Francisco is freshly revived for Shit Robot’s cheekily-titled “Feels Real,” on which Jenner plays the slinky Sylvester to Marcus Lambkin’s Patrick Cowley wizardry. Meaty and a bit menacing, Jenner asserts “I think you’ll always want my love” over washes of organ. It all builds to an ecstatic, shouted peak before the whirligig synths implode under the weight of Jenner’s pure falsetto. For the remix, Luke Solomon scrapes off some gloss and opens synthetic space around the ghosts of a guitar lick, while extending the blissful vocal peak over analog bombast and tasteful strands of acid.

Shit Robot - Answering Machine (Remixes) (Digital)

$2.49

From the very outset, the M.C.D. E. remix of Shit Robot’s “Answering Machine” picks up in a completely different realm from Marcus’ Lambkin’s original, which appears on his 2010 debut, From the Cradle to the Rave. The Stuttgart-based producer has replaced Janine “Planningtorock” Rostron’s slowly rising vocal opener with outerspace emanations that fade as they drift into a constellation of wide house grooves and deep bass. Rostron’s own Pizzo remix is up next, and in (a)typical fashion, she takes the song and shifts its mood by clearing away the dancier elements of its predecessor in favor of a foundation of strings in every form: plucked pizzicato notes, low cellos tones, and high pitched violins that flit through. Last up is another Rostron creation, the Whisper remix, which actually outpaces Lambkin’s version in bpm, but is lighter all the same. Here, she uses synths almost as a wash of white noise – a whisper, if you will – and only drops heavier vocals here and there along the song’s rustling path. - Kali Holloway

Shit Robot - I Got A Feeling (Digital)

$1.99

Shit Robot isn't the sort of name you hear every day and, as a result, Marcus Lambkin's DJ/producer alias isn't one that's easy to forget. But it's Lambkin's music that has truly left an indelible impression on dance music lovers' minds, and his newest release is no exception. On the heels of 2009's "Simple Things (Work it Out)" -- itself the follow-up to 2006's epic successes "Chasm" and "Wrong Galaxy" -- Lambkin has delivered two new tracks that seem to effortlessly set just the right mood for the dance floor.

Side A, "I Got a Feeling," plays like a song in two complimentary acts. In the first half, Lambkin builds slowly from minimal beginnings; in the second, he ups the ante with nods to house and a pleasant easing of prior restraint. In fact, it isn't until almost the exact midway point of the song that vocals -- provided, notably, by Saheer Umar, one half of New York City dance duo House of House -- first appear. From here onward, things really get going, with electro-handclaps, bassy synths, spontaneous buzzings, a driving beat and Umar's echoing vocals all heaped upon each other -- blending enough to give the track depth and weight, but distinct enough that any reveler can appreciate the precise, purposeful placement of each element.

Side B, "Norfolk Nights," quickly lays down a foundation of old-school beats, then gets to work building slow, space-y synths atop. Lambkin resists expectations by dropping the beat and letting things get eerily -- and unexpectedly -- quiet before he starts from scratch and builds from the bottom up all over again, one cosmic synth pattern at a time.

Lambkin grew up in Ireland and spent several years DJ’ing in New York City -- where he met friends and cohorts James Murphy and Tim Goldsworthy of DFA -- before moving to his current home of Stuttgart, Germany. This impressive new 12" was recorded in his home studio between constant gigs and endless tours DJ’ing around the world.
