Black Dice - Big Deal (LIES071)

$15.99

Forming during 1997 in Providence, Rhode Island experimental group Black Dice have without question paved their own way through their 20 year career. Doing what you want to do when you want to do it, no questions asked with a fully informed yet blatant disregard for everything surrounding them, always with acute execution and an ever changing singular sound. No gimmicks, no nonsense, since the beginning.

Somehow it would only make sense for Dice and L.I.E.S. to link up and after a long friendship we see it come to fruition. With this two track 12 inch Dice put their foot on the gas and ramp it up. You wanted to shred? Well this shreds. Is it a snapshot of the past? A possible nod of things to come? A moment frozen in time? We leave it for you to decide.

Canyons - Fire Eyes

$4.99

Drawing influences from the far corners of planet Earth and beyond, Australia's Canyons strikes a balance between psych and acid house, pop and disco, fiction and fact. Leo Holiday and Ryan Sea-mist have been producing their distinctly boundary-less modern cacophony for a couple of years now, attracting interest from fans of eclectic, irreverent dance music everywhere. The duo has remixed tracks for Empire of the Sun and Ladyhawke, and also runs the Hole in the Sky label. Fire Eyes is Canyons' first release for DFA Records and follows recent compilation appearances on Modular, Lo Recordings, and Cosmo Vitelli's I'm a Cliche, among others. Their debut album is in the making and will be out on Modular in late '09 / early '10. With the odd remix in the pipelines, Canyons are also piecing together a full live band to take their musical healing on the road and to the people.

"Leo Holiday and Ryan Sea-mist are the dynamos behind Australia's Canyons, offering tantalizing disco-meets-acid-house treats with a touch of pop for easy dancing pleasure...." --Urb Magazine

"... deep, grinding house that sounds like [Canyons] has been listening to Art Ensemble of Chicago and/or Popo." --The Fader

Capracara - King of the Witches
Capracara - King of the Witches

Capracara - King of the Witches

$5.99

The man behind the name Capracara is Englishman Jonathan Burnip, who has released 2 acid drenched singles on UK label Soul Jazz and remixed for the likes of Matt Edward’s Rekids label and Kill The DJ. He also remixes as one half of Tiger Timing and has contributed to the esoteric disco label History Clock. His latest project is 'Churchill's Leopards' with Joel Martin of Quiet Village.

'King of the Witches' takes its cues from the psychotronic, primitive electronics of early house music and ancestral rhythms of heathen drum machines. Chock full of wonky leftfield quirkiness and primitive sounding gear, the song is geared for the headz and the headphones and is so uniquely catchy and bouncy, it sounds more Jean Jacques Perry than Jacque Lu Cont.
The remix comes courtesy of NYC legends Rub ‘N’ Tug (Thomas Bullock and Eric Duncan), who create what will inevitably be one of the remixes of 2009, and no it is not too early to make that statement. They flip what might sound quaint into something sinister and ever-growing, a dark loopy anthemic interpretation that does nothing but help cement their status as the most creative and exciting remixers and musicians working today.

Dan Bodan - Anonymous / Hunger Games EP

$9.99

Limited vinyl edition of two previously digital-only singles by Berlin singer, songwriter, and producer. Dan Bodan, hailed by Pitchfork as "an expression of the storied NYC dance label's more oddball tastes." First up is "Anonymous", a poignant portrait of yearning for the post-Facebook generation. The A side is rounded out with a remix by DJ Richard (1/2 White Material with Young Male) that manages to drag the track to even deeper depths of anxiety.

The flip features 2013 single "Hunger Games", a widescreen epic of a track that will be stripped down to the bare minimum on Dan's forthcoming LP. It features production by left-field dance geniuses Physical Therapy and Ville Haimala of Renaissance Man. Also featured is the acclaimed Stadium Remix. Comes in a custom spineless picture sleeve featuring an illustration by Julien Ceccaldi.

Eric Copeland - Masterbater

$9.99

11 minutes of Eric Copeland that didn't quite fit on his "Joke In The Hole" LP, so we made this special one-sided 12". Comes in a custom full-art sleeve.

Eric Copeland of Black Dice returns to DFA with "Masterbater," 11+ minutes of skronking gyrations and prickly samples. The intrusions of radio static throughout, along with snatches of glossolalic R&B, make it seem as if Copeland is stuck inside his car flicking impatiently from channel to channel while a hailstorm pelts the enclosing steel.  But "Masterbater" doesn't devolve into the self-indulgence implied by the title, maintaining propulsion even as conflicting tensions swallow each other whole.

Eric Copeland - Ms Pretzel

$13.99

12" Vinyl EP in a picture sleeve featuring collaged artwork by Eric Copeland himself.

Ms Pretzel is a 4 track, 20-minute EP of brand new material by Eric Copeland (Black Dice, Terrestrial Tones). This is Eric’s return to DFA after the release of an acclaimed single on Ron Morelli’s underground dance juggernaut L.I.E.S., which followed his beloved 2013 album “Joke In The Hole”, his solo debut for DFA.

The music on Ms Pretzel most certainly continues to break new sonic ground, a process which has gradually unfolded over the last few years via many prior works on seminal underground labels such as Underwater Peoples, Escho, Post Present Medium, and Catsup Plate, among many others. Ms Pretzel takes Eric’s outsider fascination with 4/4 dance music and twists it yet again. It is the sound of Eric Copeland throwing a wobbly dance party in a junkyard. DFA could not be more excited to host this gritty event.

“If Copeland is interested in the conventions of clubland, it’s at the point where someone’s puking on their shoes outside the venue, a distant throb of bass beating into their brain through the brickwork.” - Pitchfork

“The rhythms might be recognisably house or hip-hop, but Copeland pulls and squeezes their structures like accordions.” - Resident Advisor

“Though constantly teetering on a knife’s edge - to be expected in such mental, syncopated mashups - this is wildly colourful and knowingly absurd music.” - The Quietus

Eric Copeland - Remixes (Panda Bear, Larry Gus, Fhloston Paradigm, Anthony Naples)

$10.99

Limited editon of 1000 hand-stamped and numbered copies, assembled at DFA in NYC.

DFA is proud to release a long-gestating 12” single of wild interprations of Eric Copeland’s 2013 album “Joke In The Hole”. The Black Dice member received universal acclaim for the record, “Fringe though Copeland may be, this album is a serious coup for DFA—he walks the line between complete nuttiness and outright accessibility, and ends up with one of his best records to date.” (XLR8R) Starting us off is Panda Bear, who adds his trademark falsetto vocals and shuffling percussion, sweetening Eric’s black coffee beats. DFA’s own sonic collagist Larry Gus blends Eric’s mumbled vocals with bright percussion and a vocoded male choir, among many other audio dalliances. Meanwhile, Hyperdub’s Fhloston Paradigm (AKA King Britt) takes aim with his laser cannons, firing volleys at unrelenting waves of marching alien armies, before being swallowed up in a solar flare. Finally, Anthony Naples (Text Records, Trilogy Tapes) brings it back to the club with snaps, claps, and hi-hats, but it sounds like you left ‘em out in the rear window of your car on a sunny day. You know what we mean.

Tracklisting:

  1. Cheap Treat (Panda Bear Version)
  2. Grapes (Larry Gus Remix)
  3. Cheap Treat (Fhloston Paradigm Remix)
  4. Bobby Strong (Anthony Naples Remix)

Eric Copeland ‎– Al Anon
Eric Copeland ‎– Al Anon

Eric Copeland ‎– Al Anon

$9.99

Al Anon concludes Eric Copeland’s two part album entitled Alien In A Garbage Dump (available on CD from Paw Tracks). Where the first half offered a discombobulated collection of radio cross-signaling, here the alien finds its groove for a minute and tidies up the frequencies. There is still something outsiderish here, but with more of an effort to get inside, to play by the rules even? Or maybe the motivation is to sneak something subversive into the norms’ hideout?

Since Al Anon was recorded at the same time as two Black Dice albums, there are obvious parallels in the results; an uncompromised sonic landscape. But outside the group setting, Copeland has found places one can only find alone: small inner dialogues and isolated mind caves where an idea may only last a moment. He captures and tweaks these ideas into fragments of many memories; a déjà vu record déjà vu record. Funny characters drop in and out. Songs come and go. Al Anonproves to be a strangely curated time capsule of OUR time right NOW; music where birds beat-box with car-stereo subwoofers and the neighbors’ Espanol sings on top the Sabbath siren. With all this going on, Copeland sometimes disappears into the anonymity, playing a ‘behind-the-scenes’ role, pushing cords and pulling buttons, laughing because the batteries are dying. Here the familiar becomes mysterious and the unknown feels normal and we can listen to this one all day trying to make those distinctions.

Edition of 500 copies with jaw-droppingly amazing black and white collage artwork by Copeland, screenprinted by VG Kids.
