In May 2005 DFA & LCD decided to throw a party at a midtown dance club in NYC called Downtime. It helped define a time, a sound and the ethos of a small label & band who were successfully getting their friends and fans drunk with major label money that was supposed to be spent on a fancy music video. There was an incredible sense of community and the energy of people really going for it - which is what the image represents.

This image was eventually used as a poster insert for the European 7” single version of “Disco Infiltrator.” This image established the beginning of a working relationship between LCD and photographer Ruvan Wijesooriya, who continues to document the band. This print is currently being shown as part of the touring exhibition, "Meet Me in The Bathroom."

The second edition image is printed 12x12” on archival 305 GSM 100% cotton white matte photo paper in an edition of 100, signed and numbered.

Ships unframed in gallery-grade protective packaging.

Eric Copeland - Shit Talk (Book)

$20.00

Eric Copeland presents his latest book Shit Talk -  a collection of public comments, pulled word for word from YouTube, all focused on Black Dice, the divisive band he co-founded almost 2 decades ago.

112 pages of plain text comments showcase both the passion and the frustration of Black Dice’s fanbase. You'll find casual observations, ardent rants, stoned diatribes, and lots of name calling. Emerging through it all is a detailed narrative of noise and experimental music, DIY scene politics, and an archive of passionate fandom.

The book is dedicated to “all the know-it-alls, naysayers, haters and baiters…the big mouths and big fans, comedians and aliens. Thank you!'

Eric Copeland Glyph Figure Art Print

$75.00

Made in Brooklyn, NY. Standard 18"x24" size.

Signed and numbered edition of 177 by Eric Copeland, DFA has prints 1-50.

This is a 3 color screenprint on French 100lb cover paper, printed in 2019

"Part of Copeland's "Glyph Series," "Glyph Figure" is comprised of the repetition of partial letters in alternating colors and patterns. Trying to replicate Typewriter Art, these Glyph drawings proved full of opportunities to expand on the original model. Besides being much larger than previous work, they are also Copeland's first giant step into color. Part discipline, part obsession, part endurance, part process. This particular Glyph Figure is also the cover image to Copeland's latest LP, Trogg Modal 2 (DFA Records)."

BIO:
Eric Copeland
(b. Brunswick, ME, 1978) is a musician, artist, and writer currently living and working in Palma, Spain. He is a cofounder of the reckless, ongoing Neanderthal band Black Dice since 1997. He has released music on his own since 2006. And he annually publishes a series of obsessive collections under ESL Books. A graduate of the Gallatin School of Individualized Study, his focus was on something like "subliminal language," which still guides most of his work. He is currently working on a vandalism of Brave New World, entitled "Demon Portraits."

Loaded Slogan is a new book of t-shirt texts by Eric Copeland of Black Dice.

Across 112 pages of lists, Copeland presents every slogan t-shirt he observed for one year, starting in March  2017. The resulting text reads as a poetic display of deranged musings, fashionable phrases, grammatical gaffes, and crude oddities.

The slogans were collected under the pretense that the shirts were not to feature any logos, mottos, brands, titles, teams, or bands.

"further adventures in the twisted, funny, and profound reappropriations Eric has brought us for years through his music and through his past books "Pidgin Coup" and "C&B in Palma" - Aeon Books

Eric Copeland - Pidgin Coup (Book)

$20.00

A psychedelic and strange cut n' paste novel from Eric Copeland of Black Dice. Assembled and written entirely from cutout words and phrases sourced from a biography on Judy Garland. This 120 page book was published by YA Reach and is limited to fifteen copies in the DFA store.

"Eric Copeland, fascinated by 21st century subliminal messages, used a biography on Judy Garland, “godmother of mind control”, to cut out letters from the second half of the book to include in the first. Thus creating sentences filled with toilet humor, slang, pop references and mind controlling instructions. Giving a sense of the underlying corrupted, over consumeristic world our society lives in today." (Copy via Printed Matter)

Richard Phillips is an American artist born in 1962, currently residing in New York City. In 2001, he asked Black Dice to perform at the opening of his show entitled America, which ran from September 8th to October 6, 2001.

50 24 x 36" archival posters from the launch of the show are now available. Ships immediately in protective packaging.

Full, original press release from Petzel:

On September 8th Friedrich Petzel Gallery will open America, an exhibition of seven new paintings by Richard Phillips representing contemporary social and political issues. This will be Phillips' second solo show with the gallery. There will be an opening reception from 6-8 PM on the 8th.

Iconography traditionally sits choked up and mute, smirky and slappable. But Richard Phillips de-contextualizes the images that normally sit opaquely on top of each other. His work forms a sequence of subtly disturbing social markers. There is a determination to bring clear eyes to those things that normally cancel each other out. Seen side by side his related yet apparently contradictory image choices provide a new transparency of control and desire. Removing veils and mucking about with disguise.

A coming together of mid-points within a dynamic of action. Posed and presented, just before and just after; caught on the hop, the click of the camera during a porn video. The President looking dumbly ambiguous. Strange claggy stuff on a hard to scale Stonewall Riot memorial. Laborious, detailed, hard crafted and still of the moment. Multiple references locked down and preserved. There is nothing hidden here, no bruising or fluffing of composition or style. Richard Phillips exposes our problematic relation to the visual markers of our time. The range here floats past the contemporary to embrace the breakdown of consensus. This work is the result of a stringent pedantry that refuses to sublimate the echoes of the recent past, swamping the procession and turn-over of contemporary images through pig-headed focus on those pictures that stand in-front of us, challenge the eye and suggest, this is what I thought you wanted; this is what you might deserve.
