Q&A - Tumbling Cubes
Q&A - Tumbling Cubes

Q&A - Tumbling Cubes

$7.99

Q: Who are Q & A?

A: Q & A are Quinn Luke & Alexis Georgopoulos.

Q: How did Quinn and Alexis meet?
A: The two were introduced by Chris Veltri, owner of legendary record shop GROOVE MERCHANT in San Francisco. Veltri and Luke had made a pair of plunderphonic dusted disco 12 inches under the name COPPA. Georgopoulos was a founder of the group TUSSLE and asked if COPPA would do a TUSSLE remix. This led to Luke acting as producer on the TUSSLE album TELESCOPE MIND.

Q: Can the roots of Q & A be heard on TELESCOPE MIND?
A: Yes. "WARNING," a song Alexis wrote in the studio which Quinn & Alexis then arranged and produced together as a duo. The track was critically-lauded, remixed by the likes of HOT CHIP, Switch (OPTIMO) and DENNIS YOUNG (of LIQUID LIQUID).

Q: Were they always called Q & A?
A: No. Initially calling themselves EXPANDING HEAD BAND, their first release was a remix of New Zealand's Shocking Pinks' "Cutout" for DFA.

Q: Did that get them a shit-ton of admirers among the DJ cognoscenti?
A: Hells yeah. The group has already gained an esteemed shortlist of admirers, among them TODD TERJE, SAL PRINCIPATO (LIQUID LIQUID), and BILL BREWSTER (DJ and author of leftfield disco classic LAST NIGHT A DJ SAVED MY LIFE).

Q: Is this their first 12 inch for the God-like dance music overlords at DFA?
A: Yes. “TUMBLING CUBES” is the A side. “TRAP DOOR” is on the flip.

Q: What sort of convoluted and way-nerdy musical metaphor will adequately describe the sound of “TUMBLING CUBES”?
A: “TUMBLING CUBES” is a svelte piece of Detroit-inspired electro, a lean charge where MR FINGERS meets TELEX and CARL CRAIG at THE HACIENDA.

Q: Why in the world would I flip the 12 inch over then?
A: Because “TRAP DOOR,” is a taut piece of flabby dirty disco, a dark cavern of sinister cool that comes off like a PADDED CELL edit of PATRICK ADAMS remixed by ANDREW WEATHERALL.

Q: Fuck yeah!
A: Uhhhh, not a question.

Shit Robot - OB-8

$13.00

Limited edition of just 200 copies

Ahead of the release of a new album in Spring 2016, Shit Robot fires out a warning to the clubs with a new two-tracker: 'OB-8' b/w 'Torpedo'.

The A-side is a loon-leaning hypno-house chugger in the classic Robot style, while the flip is a bottom-heavy update on that wild pitch sound: the eagle-eared among you will remember it from his appearance on Beats in Space earlier this year.

"It feels like moving fast and standing still all at once, and it's as mesmerizing as house music gets" - Pitchfork

Shit Robot - Where It's At

$10.99

Limited edition of 600 light-green colored vinyl.

Shit Robot and DFA are psyched to release “Where It’s At” another in a long-running series of collaborations with the singer/comedian/television star Reggie Watts. Reggie Watts’ vocal performance runs the gamut of Chicago dance music history - from the gloom and melodrama of iconic label Wax Trax, to the jubilant choruses of Frankie Knuckles’ house anthems. But let’s not de-emphasize the solid instrumentation provided by Mr. Marcus ‘Shit Robot’ Lambkin – we’ve got that classic DFA bassline, claps, and bleeps and bloops aplenty – mixed and manipulated by none other than our own James Murphy. The flip features a remix by London producer Johnny Aux, who turns the track into a staticy, stripped down, raw Deep House banger, with hissing glimmers of icy cymbals peeking through the smog.

Sinkane x Peaking Lights - Mean Dub
Sinkane x Peaking Lights - Mean Dub

Sinkane x Peaking Lights - Mean Dub

$12.99

Approaching a busy festival season, including a performance at Glastonbury Festival this weekend plus Womad and Meltdown later in the summer, Sinkane has joined forces with Peaking Lights for a 12” EP release entitled Mean Dub, to be released on August 21st via DFA/City Slang.

With a magical dub overhaul unique to Peaking Lights, Aaron Coyes has given a bass rich enhancement of four original Sinkane songs from last year’s celebrated album Mean Love.

Including stand-out tracks and BBC 6Music favorites "Hold Tight" and "How We Be," there is also special attention given to one of the band's signature live jams "Galley Boys," a song that succinctly explores the spiritual overlap of reggae and country western music with floating pedal steel atop a heavy reggae beat.

Combined with Peaking Lights' dub aesthetic, there is perhaps no finer example of the stylistic multiverse for which Sinkane is known, than this version of "Yacha." It is the first taster from this 34 minute EP.

The two bands met whilst on tour with The Atomic Bomb Band (the William Onyeabor tribute project for which Gallab acts as music director), and quickly developed a mutual admiration for each others work.

Dub is the epitome of music to me”, says Sinkane’s Ahmed Gallab. “It's the concept of re-defining, re-appropriating, and re-interpreting an idea. Putting a different spin on something that already exists. It's collaboration and renovation. I've always wanted someone to make dubs of Sinkane songs and these Peaking Lights joints have come out really beautifully and have shed an amazing new light and energy on our music. We can’t thank Aaron enough for these jams and the amount of work he has put into them."

Aaron of Peaking Lights commented: “Sinkane are such a pleasure to tour with! When I first heard Mean Love I was blown away by it's soulful psychedelia - not just a wash of reverb and delay psychedelic, but literally a new mind expanding approach to songwriting… Then I got into the stems to do the dub, and the fire within was lit!

Ahmed’s voice is amazing! Jaytram’s drums and Ish’s bass are fully locked in, and Johnny is a straight up shredder on guitar. I'm really, really happy with how these turned out, I hope you dig’em too. I hope I kept enough of the original essence that was already so beautifully laid out and freaked out enough for your trip.

Enjoy, brothers and sisters!"

Slim Twig - Cannabis (Limited Edition 7")

$4.20

An edition of 200 7" singles in dead-stock leafy sleeves. Includes a digital copy in a few weeks, once we master it. Stay tuned.

Ahead of his forthcoming album for DFA Records this July, Slim Twig is sharing a very special cover of Serge Gainsbourg’s “Cannabis.” The ‘Cannabis’ 7” will ship on 4/20, ahem, April 20th and a free download of the “Cannabis” single will be available to stream at weedtransfer.com. The ‘Cannabis’ 7” follows A Hound At The Hem, released last year by DFA. As a concept album exploring the troubling and the taboo and themes like the transformative power of lust, A Hound At The Hem could be interpreted as an echolike response to Serge Gainsbourg and Jean-Claude Vannier's Histoire De Melody Nelson. Hear more about Slim Twig’s upcoming projects for DFA below:

Happy 4/20. We’ve had a few pass by without a hint of any new Twig to pack pipe with. Not that the pot holiday has been synonymous with my work, but I’ve had an obsession these past few years trying to engineer tunes that might emulate the tactile engagement we feel with music when stoned, without having to spark up (not that it’ll hurt in any case). Today is as good a day as any to let you know those experiments will be released on DFA this year.

My cover of Serge Gainsbourg's ‘Cannabis’ composition is not emblematic of this technique. I’m not quite ready to unveil everything to you just yet. It lends itself better as a national anthem of where I’ve set up shop. Sometimes a feeling creeps up on you that words can’t transcend. My take on ‘Cannabis’ is a moment like this.

I thank mister Gainsbourg for yet another cosmic assist. I also thank the U.S. Girl for her impassioned vocals, Steve Chahley for his master mixing and all the other wonderful collaborators who have helped to serve up my vision.

My forthcoming album is the kind of record that will ripen under the enhancement of your imagination. It is my hope that by imbibing the substance of this ‘Cannabis’ 7" you will find yourself in exactly the condition to appreciate what I’ve rolled up next.

As ever,

ST.

Still Going - Spaghetti Circus (Feat. Reggie Watts)

$5.99

Still Going is Liv Spencer and Eric Duncan - but this single is truly home to an all-star cast, including Reggie Watts on vocals, Andrew Raposo of Hercules and Love Affair & Midnight Magic on bass, TummyTouch's Tim Lee on keys, and The VLA's Jason Rabe on guitar.

"Spaghetti Circus" is a guitar-laced piano anthem that drives to kick-and-scream dancehall levels, while the B-side, "Untitled Love," takes the listener on a sunrise Euro-disco journey. Both cuts retain Still Going's progressive magic that was originally featured on their now-classic debut "Still Going Theme / On and On."

The Juan Maclean - Happy House
The Juan Maclean - Happy House

The Juan Maclean - Happy House

$10.00

Juan Maclean’s primary creative muse has always been equal parts electro-disco music and science fiction literature, mainly the American novelist Philip K. Dick. Juan’s vision of modern life, when explored on his 2005 debut album “Less Than Human”, was viewed through similar paranoid eyes.

But now it is almost 2008 and Juan is decidedly moving further away from his “Robot Phase” into a universe some may say is slightly more optimistic and relaxed in spirit. (He still worships Dick. He always will.) "Happy House" is the first evidence of this new direction - a winning combination of Nancy Whang’s effervescent vocals, the production and mixing work of the DFA and a brilliant and relentless dance pop anthem co-written by Nancy Whang and Juan Maclean.

It is clear time touring the world as a headline DJ has also had an impact. "Like many people I know, I had DJ'd a whole load of storming sets in the privacy of my bedroom. After leaving teaching (on the east coast) to once again make and perform music, I had the time and resources to begin DJ'ing regularly in a club scene that had become increasingly popular with indie kids. To me, playing live with the band and DJ'ing are very similar in terms of performance: they both involve an interaction with the audience in order to be done successfully." In the last few months alone, Juan’s tenure on the turntables has seen him spin in places as far apart as Dublin and Sao Paolo. Experiences like hearing his own music and watching people dance to it at leading clubs like Berlin’s Panorama Bar is now starting to inform his music as much as his oft-repeated set of core influences - Paperclip People, Derrick May, Throbbing Gristle, Cerrone, Boney M, and Giorgio Moroder.

For remix duties, Juan enlisted two New Yorkers - long time downtown DJ stalwart Prince Language has started to make more of a namefor himself internationally in the last year with remixes for the likes of The Rapture, Armand Van Helden, Joakim, Stateless, and The Droyds. Here, he turns in his best remix to date with its echoes of Mudd club era NYC and Konk's "Your Life."

Rong Music's Lee Douglas blew up dance floors across the globe in 2007 with his already classic "New York Story" single, which seamlessly morphed a classic disco sound into something uniquely modern and very much his own. Like Prince Language, Lee Douglas has also released a number of successful re-edits. His remix takes “Happy House” deeper into the cosmic disco / Italo realm.

Both remixes add a that special New York City flavor, making the Happy House single a dance tourist’s window into the state of downtown clubbing in what has always historically been THE worldwide capital for boogie. It is no longer as paranoid, as cold, as robotic. The hands are back in the air and Juan Maclean’s 4/4 beating heart may just be human after all.

Track List:

  1. Happy House
  2. Happy House (Prince Language Dub)
  3. Happy House (Lee Douglas Remix)
