Larry Gus - With All Your Eyes Look (Remixes)

$1.99

Larry Gus releases another single from his DFA debut LP “Years Not Living”. This time it is the album’s  lead-off track, entitled “With All Your Eyes Look”.

There are 3 remixes as well as a gorgeous  If approaching the song from it’s literary roots and inspiration (Georges Perec’s “Life: A User’s Manual”) is all too much, the post modern take on straight up driving urgent & dramatic psychedelic rock music should be just sufficient. The song is a perfect summation of all the talents that make Larry Gus such a unique talent. The mathematical layering of musical elements both grandiose and minuscule combine to make one of the most engaging singles of the summer.

The single has been remixed by three quite diverse artists and producers: Cut Hands (William Bennett of White House fame), Black Deer (aka Willie Burns) & Tuff Sherm (aka Dro Carey). All tracks lean on the percussive and manic syncopations of the original track but spin it out into very unique and surprising directions.

  1. With All Your Eyes Look
  2. With All Your Eyes Look (Tuff Sherm Remix)
  3. With All Your Eyes Look (Black Deer Remix)

The Juan Maclean - In A Dream

$22.99

'In A Dream' is the third album from The Juan Maclean. If anything, this new LP is further evidence of the "undeniable creative chemistry between house music wizard Juan Maclean & vocalist / former LCD Soundsystem member Nancy Whang". An album of high anticipated, brand new material on the heels of The Juan Maclean's acclaimed club bangers from the last couple of years. Features singles "A Place Called Space" and "A Simple Design". Everyone that has heard the record loves the hell out of it, and I promise you will too.

Canyons - Fire Eyes

$4.99

Drawing influences from the far corners of planet Earth and beyond, Australia's Canyons strikes a balance between psych and acid house, pop and disco, fiction and fact. Leo Holiday and Ryan Sea-mist have been producing their distinctly boundary-less modern cacophony for a couple of years now, attracting interest from fans of eclectic, irreverent dance music everywhere. The duo has remixed tracks for Empire of the Sun and Ladyhawke, and also runs the Hole in the Sky label. Fire Eyes is Canyons' first release for DFA Records and follows recent compilation appearances on Modular, Lo Recordings, and Cosmo Vitelli's I'm a Cliche, among others. Their debut album is in the making and will be out on Modular in late '09 / early '10. With the odd remix in the pipelines, Canyons are also piecing together a full live band to take their musical healing on the road and to the people.

"Leo Holiday and Ryan Sea-mist are the dynamos behind Australia's Canyons, offering tantalizing disco-meets-acid-house treats with a touch of pop for easy dancing pleasure...." --Urb Magazine

"... deep, grinding house that sounds like [Canyons] has been listening to Art Ensemble of Chicago and/or Popo." --The Fader

Q&A - Tumbling Cubes
Q&A - Tumbling Cubes

Q&A - Tumbling Cubes

$7.99

Q: Who are Q & A?

A: Q & A are Quinn Luke & Alexis Georgopoulos.

Q: How did Quinn and Alexis meet?
A: The two were introduced by Chris Veltri, owner of legendary record shop GROOVE MERCHANT in San Francisco. Veltri and Luke had made a pair of plunderphonic dusted disco 12 inches under the name COPPA. Georgopoulos was a founder of the group TUSSLE and asked if COPPA would do a TUSSLE remix. This led to Luke acting as producer on the TUSSLE album TELESCOPE MIND.

Q: Can the roots of Q & A be heard on TELESCOPE MIND?
A: Yes. "WARNING," a song Alexis wrote in the studio which Quinn & Alexis then arranged and produced together as a duo. The track was critically-lauded, remixed by the likes of HOT CHIP, Switch (OPTIMO) and DENNIS YOUNG (of LIQUID LIQUID).

Q: Were they always called Q & A?
A: No. Initially calling themselves EXPANDING HEAD BAND, their first release was a remix of New Zealand's Shocking Pinks' "Cutout" for DFA.

Q: Did that get them a shit-ton of admirers among the DJ cognoscenti?
A: Hells yeah. The group has already gained an esteemed shortlist of admirers, among them TODD TERJE, SAL PRINCIPATO (LIQUID LIQUID), and BILL BREWSTER (DJ and author of leftfield disco classic LAST NIGHT A DJ SAVED MY LIFE).

Q: Is this their first 12 inch for the God-like dance music overlords at DFA?
A: Yes. “TUMBLING CUBES” is the A side. “TRAP DOOR” is on the flip.

Q: What sort of convoluted and way-nerdy musical metaphor will adequately describe the sound of “TUMBLING CUBES”?
A: “TUMBLING CUBES” is a svelte piece of Detroit-inspired electro, a lean charge where MR FINGERS meets TELEX and CARL CRAIG at THE HACIENDA.

Q: Why in the world would I flip the 12 inch over then?
A: Because “TRAP DOOR,” is a taut piece of flabby dirty disco, a dark cavern of sinister cool that comes off like a PADDED CELL edit of PATRICK ADAMS remixed by ANDREW WEATHERALL.

Q: Fuck yeah!
A: Uhhhh, not a question.

  1. TUMBLING CUBES
  2. TRAP DOOR

Black Dice - Big Deal (LIES071)

$15.99

Forming during 1997 in Providence, Rhode Island experimental group Black Dice have without question paved their own way through their 20 year career. Doing what you want to do when you want to do it, no questions asked with a fully informed yet blatant disregard for everything surrounding them, always with acute execution and an ever changing singular sound. No gimmicks, no nonsense, since the beginning.

Somehow it would only make sense for Dice and L.I.E.S. to link up and after a long friendship we see it come to fruition. With this two track 12 inch Dice put their foot on the gas and ramp it up. You wanted to shred? Well this shreds. Is it a snapshot of the past? A possible nod of things to come? A moment frozen in time? We leave it for you to decide.

Justine + The Victorian Punks - Still You

$8.99 $9.99

Unearthed limited edition of the rare 12", in a full-color picture sleeve with poster.

Born in Tunisia, raised in France, based in New York City, the artist Colette has worked in various media--film, photography, paint and performance--but her greatest conceptual piece is her own life. Over the past four decades she has lived out a narrative of her own creation, one in which she has assumed various personas, guises and identities. Her first rebirth happened in 1978, when she pronounced herself dead, held her funeral at the Mudd Club, and was resurrected as Justine. Working with avant-garde pop pioneer Peter Gordon and his Love of Life Orchestra under the nom de plume Justine and the Victorian Punks, she recorded the "Beautiful Dreamer / Still You" 12-inch and dubbed the music "disco-punk." While the term seemed contradictory at the time, it serves in hindsight as proof of Colette's and Gordon's rightful place within the future-gazing avant-garde.

"Beautiful Dreamer," the soundtrack for the installation series of the same name, opens with the soft lullaby of a music box, and transforms into a mid-tempo disco beat beneath Colette's doe-eyed utterances. Gordon's arrangement progressively heightens the track's intensity, culminating in his wailing saxophone juxtaposed against a lilting choral backing provided by vocalist Shelley Hirsch. Flipside "Still You" is a romanticized cover version of Lucio Battisti's "Ancora Tu." Front-and-center here are Colette's spoken word vocals, first in conversation with Gordon portraying a male lover and, later, dewily repeating, "Leaving you is just... impossible." The single, with its seductive bassline, fully encapsulates the sultry feeling of what might be described as "night music."

Engineered by Jay Burnett, who would go on to record Afrika Bambaataa & the Soul Sonic Force's seminal proto-hip-hop classic "Planet Rock," these two songs were, incredibly, recorded in a single night at Electric Lady Studios. Some 30-odd years after their original release, they sound as compelling and entrancing as ever. Colette and Gordon, then as now, continue to make art ahead of its time.

"Spaghetti Circus" is a guitar-laced piano anthem that drives to kick-and-scream dancehall levels, while the B-side, "Untitled Love," takes the listener on a sunrise Euro-disco journey. Larry Gus - Years Not Living

Larry Gus - Years Not Living

$9.99

Inspired by the rural environment of his hometown of Veria, Greece, multi-instrumentalist / singer / producer Panagiotis Melidis started writing music as Larry Gus (from the Greek larigas, or larynx) in 2006, soon after the early demise of his previous band Ginger (a bass and drums duo with a sound similar to the early-’00s Providence scene, paired with hip hop overtones).

Melidis initially composed production music, and later on earned a reputation for intense and chaotic live performances. He retained Ginger’s primitive aesthetics of groove based music, along with an obsession for late-’60s / early-’70s free jazz, and combined them with sample-based techniques and crystal-clear psychedelic pop melodies, all merged into infinitely dense layers and polyrhythms.

Stitches, his first proper full-length, was released in 2009 for Greek hip hop label Cast-A-Blast, and Melidis began a yearlong residency at the Music Technology Group in Barcelona as an intern and postgraduate student. He then returned back to Veria to work on his next project, Years Not Living, an album inspired by Georges Perec’s 1978 book Life: A Users Manual and Lucio Battisti’s 1974 album Anima Latina. The sessions yielded a staggering 85 songs, and the entire process, set amidst Greece’s financial crisis, was documented and will be part of the feature film My Friend Larry Gus (directed by Vasilis Katsoupis), to be released in 2013.

Pared down to ten tracks, Years Not Living incorporates a wealth of diverse styles, ranging from ’60s / ’70s psychedelia and pop to hip hop and more.
