The Juan Maclean - Can You Ever Really Know Somebody

$10.00

The Juan Maclean return to DFA with a stand-alone single, bursting with deep house elastic bounce and electronic pop flourishes, married to the deadpan earnestness of Nancy Whang’s vocal delivery.

"Can You Ever Really Know Somebody" is the kind of slinky song that is easily absorbed and difficult to forget. It is a taste of things to come, as The Juan Maclean prepares a brand new LP for DFA due out in Fall 2017.

The remix is courtesy of LA-4A, aka Ambivalent and legally known as American born producer Kevin McHugh. Stripping out the house music and replacing it with a grinding electro-acid template, LA-4A creates a lovely buzzing new bed of music for Nancy Whang’s vocals to rest on top of it. This is a remix with wildly successful results and a perfect companion to the original.

The Juan Maclean - In A Dream

$22.99

'In A Dream' is the third album from The Juan Maclean. If anything, this new LP is further evidence of the "undeniable creative chemistry between house music wizard Juan Maclean & vocalist / former LCD Soundsystem member Nancy Whang". (Pitchfork) The album takes its musical cues from Moroder's Munich to the Funky Nassau sounds of Compass Point and to anytime in downtown NYC.

An album of high anticipated, brand new material on the heels of The Juan Maclean's acclaimed club bangers from the last couple of years. Features singles "A Place Called Space" and "A Simple Design". Everyone that has heard the record loves the hell out of it, and I promise you will too.

Tracklisting:

  1. A Place Called Space
  2. Here I Am
  3. Love Stops Here
  4. You Were A Runaway
  5. Running Back To You
  6. I've Waited So Long
  7. Charlotte
  8. A Simple Design
  9. The Sun Will Never Set On Our Love

Juan Maclean is a Brooklyn-based DJ and producer who has been a mainstay of the New York club scene, as well as maintaining a rigorous international touring schedule, since the release of his first records on DFA in 2002. After putting out an extensive catalogue of 12” singles and LPs for the label with vocalist Nancy Whang (most recently, 2014’s In A Dream LP, and this year’s 12” single ‘Can You Ever Really Know Somebody’), he returns to the label with ‘The Brighter The Light,’ a deep piano-based club track, augmented by three equally DJ-friendly remixes.

“The Brighter The Light” emerged while Juan waits (somewhat) patiently in Brooklyn for Nancy Whang to return from touring with her ‘side gig,' LCD Soundsystem. Taking the tiniest splice of a demo vocal and sprinkling it throughout, Juan spun off the work being done for the next LP and created a new piece altogether, offering the smallest glimpse of what is to come, but ending up with something with a completely different purpose: his DJ set.

The remixes are a truly euphoric bunch of tracks, coming from Australia’s Len Liese (yes his remix is Balearic AF), DJ Tennis, (fresh from his fantastic DJ Kicks released in July) and Octo Octa, who contributes her second remix for The Juan Maclean (look up her remix of 'Here I Am' from 2014, it’s brilliant).

There are already two more singles being planned (with a similar club-driven purpose) to tide over fans and DJ sets while Juan and Nancy finish work on their fourth LP, to be released in 2018.

B2) Zone Non Linear (Massimilliano Pagliara Remix)

The Juan Maclean
returns to DFA with a new 12” – last June’s electro-disco “What Do You Feel Free About?” backed with “Zone Non Linear,” which evokes early Pet Shop Boys. As usual, Juan's sunny productions and Nancy's layered vocals come together, this time in collaboration with Juan MacLean live band member, Monika Heidemann, to lend a maximalist warmth to the dance floor. Man Power (ESP Institute, Correspondant) gives the A-side a club rework with a dubbed out vocal arrangement that adds a touch more drama to the track, while Massimiliano Pagliara (Ostgut Ton, Robert Johnson) revitalizes tropes of old-school piano house.

Juan Maclean is a Brooklyn-based DJ and producer who has been a mainstay of the New York club scene, as well as maintaining a rigorous international touring schedule, since the release of his first records on DFA in 2002. He’s released an extensive catalogue of 12” singles and LPs for the label with vocalist Nancy Whang (most recently, 2014’s In A Dream LP, and 2017’s 12” single ‘The Brighter The Light’). Stay tuned for their fourth full-length record, coming later this year.

Walter Jones - I'll Keep on Loving You

Walter Jones - I'll Keep on Loving You

$9.00

Tracklist:

1) I'll Keep On Loving You
2) Living Without Your Love
3) Living Without Your Love (Instrumental Re-Work)

"That spectral voice that presides over "I'll Keep On Loving You," the A-side to Walter Jones' debut 12-inch for DFA isn't some Julee Cruise wannabe. It's Jones himself, reverbed to the max, and transformed into a ghostly presence over the slo-motion disco groove that propels the song forward ever so slowly. "I sound just like Luciano Pavarotti in the car, alone, with the radio blaring," Jones told The Fader earlier this year. But this is even better—a perfect complement to one of the most seductive beats you'll hear all year.

"Living Without Your Love" has the same lo-fi feel as its predecessor, picking up oooohs and aaaahs to counterpoint the shampoo synth and sharp-pricked guitar lick (provided by none other than fellow deep house producer Juju). It loses some of the vibe in its instrumental reworking, but unless you want to put your own vocals over top, I suggest you keep with the vocal version anyway. If this track is as big of a hit as it should be on nu-disco dance floors, the clubbers will be begging for it."

YACHT - Shangri-La (Deluxe White Vinyl LP)

$19.99

Deluxe White Vinyl 2XLP with 4 slipcovers and a gatefold jacket with lyrics and spot-gloss. The CD is like a baby version of it. Yeah, it's luxurious. Features Dystopia (The Earth Is On Fire), I Walked Alone, and Shangri-La. Comes with an instant digital download.

Shangri-La, YACHT’s second album for DFA Records and the follow-up to their critically acclaimed full-length, See Mystery Lights, is the duo’s most thematically ambitious work to date, showcasing an exponential evolution in songwriting and sharp, surreal hooks. When the darkly anthemic track, “Dystopia (The Earth Is on Fire),” was released digitally in April, YACHT offered a window onto the new album. Members Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans described the track as an “apocalyptic fight song, a cautionary tale, a science-fiction story for our particular eco-sociopolitical landscape.” These themes are echoed throughout the conceptually unified Shangri-La. In contrast to the meditative, mantra-esque quality of their debut, Shangri-La is a narrative work.

The album explores mankind’s eternal pursuit of Utopia with a soundtrack comprised of compelling pop melodies, fiercely druggy grooves and an endlessly diverse canon of influences. The message here is that the future is a blank slate upon which anything can be imposed. Shangri-La is literally YACHT’s idea of Utopia: a place made of songs. Never a band to stay in one place sonically, visually or philosophically, YACHT transformed themselves, taking advantage of a proper studio for the very first time and using more live instrumentation than ever before.

Recording in the West Texas desert without an engineer, the duo employed a kaleidoscope of genres—ranging from disco to psychedelia, from krautrock to punk—all culminating in pure pop. Shangri-La was performed, mixed, and recorded by Bechtolt and Evans themselves. The Utopian illustration featured in the album’s encyclopedic cover design was painted by iconic science fiction illustrator Jim Burns, three-time Hugo Award-winner.

YACHT - Summer Song

$10.00

This information is going to be presented in bullet form, because YACHT is very committed to efficiency.
  • In fact, if this onesheet could somehow be a PowerPoint presentation, Yacht would be absolutely thrilled.
  • YACHT would use as many transition effects as possible in the PowerPoint one-sheet.
  • YACHT's favorite transition effect is: Confetti (without gravity).
  • "Summer Song" was originally recorded as a love letter to tourmates LCD Soundsystem, and released for free online.
  • YACHT is as surprised as you are that DFA wanted to release the song.
  • "Summer Song" was recorded, produced, mixed by Jona Bechtolt in an apartment in Portland, Oregon.
  • YACHT has expanded to add an additional full-time member, Claire L. Evans.
  • Also features two brand-new, previously unreleased tracks.
  • One is a complex and empowering banger about living anywhere you want, from the new album, See Mystery Lights.
  • The other one is a preemptive remix from another new song on the forthcoming/aforementioned album.
  • Incidentally, this is DFA's first "audio handshake" with representatives of Portland, Oregon.
  •  At this point in the presentation, Yacht would use a 3D Cube transition.
  • The music video for "Summer Song" was filmed by Portland director Judah Switzer.
  • He also made that awesome Scout Niblett video where she puts all that bread in her face.
  • YACHT remixes itself.
  • Oh, and the new YACHT album is set for release in 2009.
  • Thanks for your time.
