$19.98

Limited editon of 1000 hand-stamped and numbered copies, assembled at DFA in NYC.

DFA is proud to release a long-gestating 12” single of wild interprations of Eric Copeland’s 2013 album “Joke In The Hole”. The Black Dice member received universal acclaim for the record, “Fringe though Copeland may be, this album is a serious coup for DFA—he walks the line between complete nuttiness and outright accessibility, and ends up with one of his best records to date.” (XLR8R) Starting us off is Panda Bear, who adds his trademark falsetto vocals and shuffling percussion, sweetening Eric’s black coffee beats. DFA’s own sonic collagist Larry Gus blends Eric’s mumbled vocals with bright percussion and a vocoded male choir, among many other audio dalliances. Meanwhile, Hyperdub’s Fhloston Paradigm (AKA King Britt) takes aim with his laser cannons, firing volleys at unrelenting waves of marching alien armies, before being swallowed up in a solar flare. Finally, Anthony Naples (Text Records, Trilogy Tapes) brings it back to the club with snaps, claps, and hi-hats, but it sounds like you left ‘em out in the rear window of your car on a sunny day. You know what we mean.

Montreal duo Essaie pas return to DFA with a 12-inch that picks up where their 2018 album New Path left off. "Earth" is a blistering ride through the rave, an amalgamation of techno and trance. The galloping bassline is the backbone of the song, and Marie Davidson’s vocals climb to new heights against synth stabs. "Corps Étranger," with its stuttering percussion, is a slow burner in comparison. For the remix of "Earth," Marco Passarani of Tiger & Woods (Running Back, Numbers) doubles down on the Italo disco angle and doesn’t shy away from the more anthemic moments of the original, managing to rework it into something akin to a celebration of this "shithole" we call Earth.

Pixeltan - Yamerarena-I 12"

Pixeltan - Yamerarena-I 12"

$15.00

Pixeltan's latest effort – their first release in five years, and long overdue – is a 4 song EP that solidifies a sound that has been slowly (very slowly) been developing over the course of almost a decade now, and also manages to completely redefine what these 3 are capable of. The new tracks are both referential and reverential, while still being wholly of this time, modern, fun and very funky indeed.

On their new four-song EP, the band takes inspiration from a number of sources. On "Yamerarena-I," Pixeltan builds atop Afro percussion with steady bass and guitar lines, and Yoneta's matter-of-fact vocals, which veer from Japanese to English (Yamerarena means "can't stop" in Japanese). "Scatter" and "No More Delay" take a page – or at least a few notes – from Larry Levan's Paradise Garage disco songbook, while "I Told You So" shows an appreciation for ESG, but adds layers of dynamic percussive elements and showcases Yoneta's vocal ability to go from sweetly menacing to raw-throated screams within the song's mere four minutes. ("I told you so," she spits, before adding, as if to ward off any remaining doubts, "I told you so...bitch.")

The eclecticism of Pixeltan’s sounds is a natural byproduct of the musical experience each member brings to the trio: drummer Hisham Bharoocha formerly played with both Black Dice and Lightning Bolt; bass player Devin Flynn and singer Mika Yoneta are ex-members of Plate Tectonics. The Brooklyn-based threesome originally formed in 1998, and released their self-titled EP in 2001. The same year, they collaborated with DFA on a remix of their song "Get Up/Say What," which the public didn't hear until 2004. The resulting track – a throbbing mix of jittery bass, dancefloor beckoning handclaps, and Yoneta's alternately seductive and screeching banshee vocals – invoked an immediacy that resonated instantly with listeners.

DFA is pleased to announce a new 12” single by Ninos Du Brasil.

Ninos Du Brasil are Nicolò Fortuni and Nico Vascellari, an Italian percussion duo with a background in visual art. Through their aptitude with drumming, they are masters at fusing the seemingly disparate influences of punk, tribal techno, and batacuda, emerging with a sound that is truly singular. The project takes its rhythmic backbone from Brazilian carnival music, and the duo injects each track with the frothy attitude of punk and the shuffling dancefloor domination of techno.

Nico Vascellari had the following to say of these two tracks: “These two songs are meant to be poisonous and malignant, As if somebody had the idea of inviting us to a party between the bushes of Queimada Grande (Snake Island, Brazil.)”

“... it’s unclear who’s doing what. Some of the elements belong together, according to tradition, and some of them don’t; there’s a little thrill in the friction.” - New York Times

“It bears no baggage, no symbolism, no risky appropriation or titles, just a refined, focused dimension and a riveting set of textures that showcase the group’s intricate techniques, all of it imbued with their own menacing panache.” - Tiny Mix Tapes

“...humid, vibrant and intoxicating on one hand, dark, nightmarish and unforgiving on the other.” - Juno Download

4. I'm So Bored

After turning in a wall-shaking remix of Essaie pas last year, Romanian production duo Khidja present their first EP for DFA. These four tracks are deep, spooky heaters – think John Carpenter in the club, with industrial basslines, frenetic melodies careening a bit out of control, and vocals echoing from the corners of the room. Their signature throb that runs along all four tracks, influenced by their time spent in underground scenes in Bucharest, London, and Berlin, as well as an emphasis on the jagged sounds of hardware.

Having established themselves with previous releases on labels like Hivern Discs and Malka Tuti, Khidja get darker, dubbier, and more twisted on In The Middle Of The Night. We find the record in the witching hour, and the tracks represent the cycle of nighttime mentalities, revealing the various directions the mind can wander in the place between consciousness and unconsciousness – mania, paranoia, even boredom. It all makes for a raucous dancefloor experience, with the duo bringing something new and heavy to the DFA roster.

$17.98

Limited to 300 copies worldwide.

The Pacific Northwest musician John Greek originally released “I’m Hot For Your Body” as a limited private press 12” single in 1979 - rumors abound that only 100 copies were ever made, though much about this record feels apocryphal.

Across six minutes of sordid, primal disco-blues, Mr. Greek slowly yields to the power of desire, chasing swirling string synths around the shadows like they’re ghosts, dousing everything in flange it’s lighter fluid. It is both terrifying and undeniable.

With permission from Mr. Greek’s estate, we’ve remastered the original and presented it alongside a even-more-unhinged version from Velvet Season & The Hearts Of Gold, the duo of Gerry Rooney (co-founder of the legendary Black Cock edits label) and Joel Martin (of Quiet Village).

Not for the faint of heart, this.

Remastered and cut by Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering Service.

Pressed by the good humans at Furnace Record Pressing in Alexandria, VA.

Sinkane x Peaking Lights - Mean Dub

$14.98

Four premium dub remixes of Sinkane by Peaking Lights, housed in a natural tan sleeve with red/green/yellow heady gradient center label.

Approaching a busy festival season, including a performance at Glastonbury Festival this weekend plus Womad and Meltdown later in the summer, Sinkane has joined forces with Peaking Lights for a 12” EP release entitled Mean Dub, to be released on August 21st via DFA/City Slang.

With a magical dub overhaul unique to Peaking Lights, Aaron Coyes has given a bass rich enhancement of four original Sinkane songs from last year’s celebrated album Mean Love.

Including stand-out tracks and BBC 6Music favorites "Hold Tight" and "How We Be," there is also special attention given to one of the band's signature live jams "Galley Boys," a song that succinctly explores the spiritual overlap of reggae and country western music with floating pedal steel atop a heavy reggae beat.

Combined with Peaking Lights' dub aesthetic, there is perhaps no finer example of the stylistic multiverse for which Sinkane is known, than this version of "Yacha." It is the first taster from this 34 minute EP.

The two bands met whilst on tour with The Atomic Bomb Band (the William Onyeabor tribute project for which Gallab acts as music director), and quickly developed a mutual admiration for each others work.

Dub is the epitome of music to me”, says Sinkane’s Ahmed Gallab. “It's the concept of re-defining, re-appropriating, and re-interpreting an idea. Putting a different spin on something that already exists. It's collaboration and renovation. I've always wanted someone to make dubs of Sinkane songs and these Peaking Lights joints have come out really beautifully and have shed an amazing new light and energy on our music. We can’t thank Aaron enough for these jams and the amount of work he has put into them."

Aaron of Peaking Lights commented: “Sinkane are such a pleasure to tour with! When I first heard Mean Love I was blown away by it's soulful psychedelia - not just a wash of reverb and delay psychedelic, but literally a new mind expanding approach to songwriting… Then I got into the stems to do the dub, and the fire within was lit!

Ahmed’s voice is amazing! Jaytram’s drums and Ish’s bass are fully locked in, and Johnny is a straight up shredder on guitar. I'm really, really happy with how these turned out, I hope you dig’em too. I hope I kept enough of the original essence that was already so beautifully laid out and freaked out enough for your trip.

Enjoy, brothers and sisters!"

Junto Club - Warm Me Up 12"

$13.00

Glasgow's Junto Club return with their second EP. In their own words...

This is the second in our planned trilogy of Junto Club EPs. If the first was the birth of the Junto Club, this is the middle-aged existential crisis.

We've followed the same ethos as the first EP, allowing the music to develop organically rather than being restricted by considerations of genre. Naturally, this was shaped by our experiences of the first EP.

While the first EP developed through our experimentation with new sounds behind closed doors, this EP was the result of our attempts to retrospectively understand those creations and the interpretations of others. These reflections were mixed with our reimagining of those discoveries and our experiences of their live performance.

Warm Me Up is not the same as the Junto Club EP because those virgin sessions can never be recreated. Nor should they be. This is the middle aged existential crisis of the Junto Club. And we hope you enjoy dancing to it.

Black Meteoric Star - Dominatron b/w Anthem 12"

$14.98

Black Meteoric Star is the latest project by longtime DFA alumni Gavin Russom. The project is inspired equal parts Euro-disco, wonky early electronic body music from America's Midwest and an always present fascination with the outer reaches of global psychedelic rock. Gavin Russom began the recordings for Black Meteoric Star sometime in 2006. It was at this time that Carl Craig remixed Delia Gonzalez & Gavin Russom's single "Relevee", making it one of the years biggest dance club anthems. Three vinyl 12" singles by Black Meteoric Star will be released on DFA Records with extended original versions in 2009 along with a full self-titled CD that edits and compiles all six singles. There will be an edition of 100 of each 12" hand stamped and accompanied by a series of posters also designed by Russom. These releases will follow a narrative line and the six pieces of music tell a story of clubbing and the long journey through the night and into the next day. In this project, Russom carries his ability to create rich sonic landscapes to the dance floor using minimal but intense arrangements and high-energy repetition.

The second single "Dominatron / Anthem" takes place after midnight. The animal energy encountered in "World Eater" is released and splits itself into female and male parts. This 12" is the story of their struggle for power over one another. "Dominatron" is the feminine side and "Anthem" is the masculine side. As in a possession ritual, each side appears and does its dance. Rhode Island native Gavin Russom now lives and works in Berlin. He has produced many remixes recently, including a new single by Croatian techno artist Petar Dundov, New York's avant garde duo Palms and a remix featured on the upcoming soundtrack for the remake of the movie Tron.

In this project, Russom carries his ability to create rich sonic landscapes to the dance floor using minimal but intense arrangements and high-energy repetition.

The first single "Death Tunnel" / "World Eater" tells the story of the personal entry into darkness. In "Death Tunnel" the rhythmic lines lose their edges as they repeat in a tense nature. We are driving forward fast and this somehow creates a particular kind of ecstasy. As in twilight, borders become unclear and the boundary between inner and outer becomes soft. Sounds like electronic waves connects the experience to the ocean, another vast, unknowable place of transformation. "World Eater" was created under circumstances such that even Gavin has no idea how many of the sounds were created. It has been said to suggest a panther prowling through the jungle, looking for prey. Considering the above, that seems appropriate enough. Rhode Island native Gavin Russom now lives and works in Berlin. He has produced many remixes recently, including a new single by Croatian techno artist Petar Dundov, New York's avant garde duo Palms and a remix featured on the upcoming soundtrack for the remake of the movie Tron.

Eric Copeland - Ms Pretzel 12"

$12.98

12" Vinyl EP in a picture sleeve featuring collaged artwork by Eric Copeland himself.

Ms Pretzel is a 4 track, 20-minute EP of brand new material by Eric Copeland (Black Dice, Terrestrial Tones). This is Eric’s return to DFA after the release of an acclaimed single on Ron Morelli’s underground dance juggernaut L.I.E.S., which followed his beloved 2013 album “Joke In The Hole”, his solo debut for DFA.

The music on Ms Pretzel most certainly continues to break new sonic ground, a process which has gradually unfolded over the last few years via many prior works on seminal underground labels such as Underwater Peoples, Escho, Post Present Medium, and Catsup Plate, among many others. Ms Pretzel takes Eric’s outsider fascination with 4/4 dance music and twists it yet again. It is the sound of Eric Copeland throwing a wobbly dance party in a junkyard. DFA could not be more excited to host this gritty event.

“If Copeland is interested in the conventions of clubland, it’s at the point where someone’s puking on their shoes outside the venue, a distant throb of bass beating into their brain through the brickwork.” - Pitchfork

“The rhythms might be recognisably house or hip-hop, but Copeland pulls and squeezes their structures like accordions.” - Resident Advisor

“Though constantly teetering on a knife’s edge - to be expected in such mental, syncopated mashups - this is wildly colourful and knowingly absurd music.” - The Quietus

$14.98

Limited edition of 600 light-green colored vinyl.

Shit Robot and DFA are psyched to release “Where It’s At” another in a long-running series of collaborations with the singer/comedian/television star Reggie Watts. Reggie Watts’ vocal performance runs the gamut of Chicago dance music history - from the gloom and melodrama of iconic label Wax Trax, to the jubilant choruses of Frankie Knuckles’ house anthems. But let’s not de-emphasize the solid instrumentation provided by Mr. Marcus ‘Shit Robot’ Lambkin – we’ve got that classic DFA bassline, claps, and bleeps and bloops aplenty – mixed and manipulated by none other than our own James Murphy. The flip features a remix by London producer Johnny Aux, who turns the track into a staticy, stripped down, raw Deep House banger, with hissing glimmers of icy cymbals peeking through the smog.

DFA is pleased to announce three 12" vinyl singles, consisting of remixes of "How You Say" from Factory Floor's self-titled debut LP.

This one (DFA2439) features two unique remixes by Bookworms (L.I.E.S. / Confused House), which marks his return to DFA following an anxious remix of The Night Patrols by Larry Gus in 2013. It reinforces the deep and dark acidic sounds he has become so well known for, taking this hypnotic single and tweaking it out for maximum impact.

Capracara - King of the Witches 12"

$10.00

The man behind the name Capracara is Englishman Jonathan Burnip, who has released 2 acid drenched singles on UK label Soul Jazz and remixed for the likes of Matt Edward’s Rekids label and Kill The DJ. He also remixes as one half of Tiger Timing and has contributed to the esoteric disco label History Clock. His latest project is 'Churchill's Leopards' with Joel Martin of Quiet Village.

'King of the Witches' takes its cues from the psychotronic, primitive electronics of early house music and ancestral rhythms of heathen drum machines. Chock full of wonky leftfield quirkiness and primitive sounding gear, the song is geared for the headz and the headphones and is so uniquely catchy and bouncy, it sounds more Jean Jacques Perry than Jacque Lu Cont.
The remix comes courtesy of NYC legends Rub ‘N’ Tug (Thomas Bullock and Eric Duncan), who create what will inevitably be one of the remixes of 2009, and no it is not too early to make that statement. They flip what might sound quaint into something sinister and ever-growing, a dark loopy anthemic interpretation that does nothing but help cement their status as the most creative and exciting remixers and musicians working today.

Larry Gus - With All Your Eyes Look (Remixes) 12"

$12.98

Larry Gus releases another single from his DFA debut LP “Years Not Living”. This time it is the album’s  lead-off track, entitled “With All Your Eyes Look”.

There are 3 remixes as well as a gorgeous  If approaching the song from it’s literary roots and inspiration (Georges Perec’s “Life: A User’s Manual”) is all too much, the post modern take on straight up driving urgent & dramatic psychedelic rock music should be just sufficient. The song is a perfect summation of all the talents that make Larry Gus such a unique talent. The mathematical layering of musical elements both grandiose and minuscule combine to make one of the most engaging singles of the summer.

The single has been remixed by three quite diverse artists and producers: Cut Hands (William Bennett of White House fame), Black Deer (aka Willie Burns) & Tuff Sherm (aka Dro Carey). All tracks lean on the percussive and manic syncopations of the original track but spin it out into very unique and surprising directions.

Canyons - Fire Eyes

$9.99

Drawing influences from the far corners of planet Earth and beyond, Australia's Canyons strikes a balance between psych and acid house, pop and disco, fiction and fact. Leo Holiday and Ryan Sea-mist have been producing their distinctly boundary-less modern cacophony for a couple of years now, attracting interest from fans of eclectic, irreverent dance music everywhere. The duo has remixed tracks for Empire of the Sun and Ladyhawke, and also runs the Hole in the Sky label. Fire Eyes is Canyons' first release for DFA Records and follows recent compilation appearances on Modular, Lo Recordings, and Cosmo Vitelli's I'm a Cliche, among others. Their debut album is in the making and will be out on Modular in late '09 / early '10. With the odd remix in the pipelines, Canyons are also piecing together a full live band to take their musical healing on the road and to the people.

"Leo Holiday and Ryan Sea-mist are the dynamos behind Australia's Canyons, offering tantalizing disco-meets-acid-house treats with a touch of pop for easy dancing pleasure...." --Urb Magazine

"... deep, grinding house that sounds like [Canyons] has been listening to Art Ensemble of Chicago and/or Popo." --The Fader

Michoacan - In the Dark Of The Night 12"

$10.00

The one-two kick drum beat that starts “In the Dark of the Night” functions as a bit of a tease. Instead of just establishing the languid pace of the track, it has the power of suggestion, and its stark nakedness raises the question of just what will happen when the music fully launches. When, a few seconds later, a punch-drunk, flanging keyboard enters the procession, it’s the first clue that we are in for an off-kilter ride; the sauntering bassline that next appears adds a springy, funk bounce. But it’s the tripped-out, multi-tracked vocals of Fernando Miranda Rios – aka Michoacan, the producer behind this slow reveal – that give the song its peculiar, space-y vibe; it’s a bit like David Byrne with funk aspirations. Taken altogether – and there is plenty more, including tinkling piano notes; bits of percussion; and electrical washes – there’s a vaguely cosmic feel. The song coalesces, using funk to lure you to the dance floor, then intoxicating you to keep you there.

The Side B re-mix – courtesy of Italy’s Clap Rules – actually feels like more of a re-build: The song has been taken apart and put back together with all brand new parts. Instead of the more relaxed, dazed funk at the core of the original, it’s a glittery, disco ball-splattered track with funk elements scattered here and there, and glossy keys all around.

“In the Dark of the Night” is Michoacan’s debut DFA release. He has already created music for Grayhound, Headinghome, Lektroluvv, Smash Hit Music Co., Speak Recordings, Bearfunk and Tiny Sticks.

Glasgow duo Ladies As Pimps, a.k.a. LAPS, make their DFA debut with the Who Me? EP. After first meeting each other in an analogue production course run by Green Door Studio several years ago, Lady Two Collars (Golden Teacher) and Sue Zuki (Organs of Love) have now refined their sound and produced one of the most focused and vital club singles to emerge from the Glasgow underground, with their unique and thoroughly danceable fusion of dub, house, and trip-hop.

“Who Me?” asks the question via a French-English narration, anchored by a hard-edged rhythm that assertively struts between percussive triplets and whizzing frequencies. “Ladybug” gets even more dubbed out, with arrangements that unfurl somewhere between Neneh Cherry, ESG, and early Tricky. “Who Me?” caught the ears of everyone from Ben UFO (who hosted LAPS live at XOYO and on Rinse FM) to Rihanna, who featured their music in her Savage x Fenty show at this year’s NYFW.

On remix duties, LA producer M. Geddes Gengras appears under the Duppy Gun alias, chopping the vocal track into a pleasantly disorienting remix. Vancouver-based D. Tiffany (Coastal Haze, Pacific Rhythm) and Melbourne up-and-comer Roza Terenzi collaborate on a stripped-back, high-energy take, while ANY WAYS, a.k.a. Tom Marshallsay (Golden Teacher, General Ludd) rounds out the EP, bringing it back to Glasgow.

“Who Me?” and “Ladybug” were originally released in July 2017 by MIC Records (London, UK). This EP is a co-release between MIC and DFA. Vinyl 12" launches January 25th.

1) Eric Copeland - Heads (Parris Remix)
2) Eric Copeland - Heads (RAMZi Remix)
3) Eric Copeland - 321 Contact (Lokier Remix)
4) Eric Copeland - Electric Mud (Gerry Read Remix)

After the success of last year’s Mixbone EP, we once again invite four dance music experimentalists to remix Eric Copeland. Where 2017’s Goofballs was the first album recorded in its entirety in Eric’s current home of Palma de Mallorca, Spain, and the result of countless hours spent working in the studio, last fall’s Trogg Modal Vol. 1 pushed his 'Freakbeat 4/4' agenda even further, with a sense of humor that bubbles over and out through the speakers. Rife with chunky percussive layers and tweaked loopy vocals, these frenzied, self-described “rippers” are practically designed to be remixed.

Parris (Trilogy Tapes, Hemlock) and RAMZi (RVNG, 12th Isle) both take on the singsongy rhythms of “Heads.” Parris’ take pares down the track, giving it room to glisten and expand, while RAMZi’s paddles along in a characteristically murky, laid-back manner. Lokier (Days Of Being Wild, Spirits) goes in for the jugular with an acidic rework of “321 Contact,” repurposing vocal samples as spooky EBM. Closing out the record is Gerry Read (Aus, Accidental Jnr), who pits the heavy stomp of “Electric Mud” against whizzing frequencies. Newfangled interpretations of tracks that were already out there to begin with.
