Eric Copeland - Remixes (Panda Bear, Larry Gus, Fhloston Paradigm, Anthony Naples) 12"

$19.98

Limited editon of 1000 hand-stamped and numbered copies, assembled at DFA in NYC.

DFA is proud to release a long-gestating 12” single of wild interprations of Eric Copeland’s 2013 album “Joke In The Hole”. The Black Dice member received universal acclaim for the record, “Fringe though Copeland may be, this album is a serious coup for DFA—he walks the line between complete nuttiness and outright accessibility, and ends up with one of his best records to date.” (XLR8R) Starting us off is Panda Bear, who adds his trademark falsetto vocals and shuffling percussion, sweetening Eric’s black coffee beats. DFA’s own sonic collagist Larry Gus blends Eric’s mumbled vocals with bright percussion and a vocoded male choir, among many other audio dalliances. Meanwhile, Hyperdub’s Fhloston Paradigm (AKA King Britt) takes aim with his laser cannons, firing volleys at unrelenting waves of marching alien armies, before being swallowed up in a solar flare. Finally, Anthony Naples (Text Records, Trilogy Tapes) brings it back to the club with snaps, claps, and hi-hats, but it sounds like you left ‘em out in the rear window of your car on a sunny day. You know what we mean.

Tracklisting:

  2. Grapes (Larry Gus Remix)

The Juan Maclean
returns to DFA with a new 12” – last June’s electro-disco “What Do You Feel Free About?” backed with “Zone Non Linear,” which evokes early Pet Shop Boys. As usual, Juan's sunny productions and Nancy's layered vocals come together, this time in collaboration with Juan MacLean live band member, Monika Heidemann, to lend a maximalist warmth to the dance floor. Man Power (ESP Institute, Correspondant) gives the A-side a club rework with a dubbed out vocal arrangement that adds a touch more drama to the track, while Massimiliano Pagliara (Ostgut Ton, Robert Johnson) revitalizes tropes of old-school piano house.

Juan Maclean is a Brooklyn-based DJ and producer who has been a mainstay of the New York club scene, as well as maintaining a rigorous international touring schedule, since the release of his first records on DFA in 2002. He’s released an extensive catalogue of 12” singles and LPs for the label with vocalist Nancy Whang (most recently, 2014’s In A Dream LP, and 2017’s 12” single ‘The Brighter The Light’). Stay tuned for their fourth full-length record, coming later this year.

Boils Pupul - Neon Buddha 12"

$14.98

Side A: Neon Buddha
Side B: Rendez-Voodoo

Fresh off the back of an acclaimed debut album with long-time collaborator Charlotte Adigéry; Belgium-Chinese musician Bolis Pupul explores themes of heritage and identity on his new solo two-track 12-inch ‘Neon Buddha’ - out 6th May.

Mixing widescreen electronica – think early Mr Fingers-like techno and Yellow Magic Orchestra’s exuberant man-machine minimalism – with the warm-hearted and wonky naivete of Belgian New Beat, Bolis’ singular sonics are at once playful, emotive, unrelenting and tender. The title track is inspired by a dream Bolis had of a pagoda in Hong Kong featuring a contemplative Buddha made of neon lights. The music is similarly bright and exciting – an insistent acid squiggle giving the track the requisite Weatherall-friendly 'A Love from Outer Space' chug.

The vinyl is housed in a UV Gloss Sleeve with a heavyweight printed inner.

Peter Gordon & Factory Floor - Beachcombing 12"

$13.00

It all started with a fan letter…

“Hey Peter, just noticed you on a Rhys Chatham link. Just want to say I adore your work, I had a release on DFA recently, and they sent me some of your releases you did with Jonathan - so brilliant! I’ve had “Condo” track for a while, this completely catches my personality and when I feel disillusioned or need comfort, I always put this on, and it makes me feel good and strong.....i will stop gushing now! Thank you! Nik Colk Void x”

This was Peter’s reaction…

“I was quite flattered and was glad that ‘Condo’, one of my lesser-know tracks, was being appreciated. (I was also curious, because the most-viewed clip of ‘Condo’ on Youtube is actually a slowed down version: someone played the 12” 45rpm EP at 33 rpm. The result, however, is quite beautiful.)

I responded, said I hoped we could meet the next time I am in London, and Nik then suggested that she had a track that she was working on, and would I like to listen to it and possibly collaborate. I am always game for a new challenge, so I said sure and Nik sent an mp3.

I was immediately struck by the haunting and evocative nature of the track, the analog synths feeling fresh and familiar at the same time, the vocals having a primal quality of breath and phrasing. I loaded the track into Ableton and instinctively began recording some overdubs. I used analog (Prophet 5) and digital (Moog iPad) synths and a soprano saxophone. I then sent a mix to Nik.

Nik responded quite positively, and over the next few weeks we exchanged files back and forth, experimenting with different mixes and submixes. After a couple of dozen rough mixes, accompanied by email discussions among the three of us (Gabe had entered the process after the first few exchanges,) we settled on a final mix. Shortly after we had a final mix, I synchronized the track with a video that my partner Kit Fitzgerald was working on. This long extended shot fit the music perfectly, and we had a video for ‘Beachcombing’. (A still from this video serves as the artwork for the 12”.)

Initially, there was going to be a one-sided 12”, with ‘Beachcombing’ the only track. Nik then wrote to me that Dominic was also interested in working on a track, and would I be interested in working on a B-side with Dom. Of course, I readily agreed, and I received an mp3 of synth tracks. As previously, I began building up tracks, using the alto sax (rather than the sopranino used on Beachcombing) and the addition of a vintage Korg vocoder.

Once again, a series of file exchanges of mixes, submixes and discreet tracks ensued, and we finally settled on mix #26a. There is kind of a sweet quality which surprised the both of us.”

Eric Copeland ‎– Al Anon 12"
Eric Copeland ‎– Al Anon 12"

Eric Copeland ‎– Al Anon 12"

$12.98

Al Anon concludes Eric Copeland’s two part album entitled Alien In A Garbage Dump (available on CD from Paw Tracks). Where the first half offered a discombobulated collection of radio cross-signaling, here the alien finds its groove for a minute and tidies up the frequencies. There is still something outsiderish here, but with more of an effort to get inside, to play by the rules even? Or maybe the motivation is to sneak something subversive into the norms’ hideout?

Since Al Anon was recorded at the same time as two Black Dice albums, there are obvious parallels in the results; an uncompromised sonic landscape. But outside the group setting, Copeland has found places one can only find alone: small inner dialogues and isolated mind caves where an idea may only last a moment. He captures and tweaks these ideas into fragments of many memories; a déjà vu record déjà vu record. Funny characters drop in and out. Songs come and go. Al Anonproves to be a strangely curated time capsule of OUR time right NOW; music where birds beat-box with car-stereo subwoofers and the neighbors’ Espanol sings on top the Sabbath siren. With all this going on, Copeland sometimes disappears into the anonymity, playing a ‘behind-the-scenes’ role, pushing cords and pulling buttons, laughing because the batteries are dying. Here the familiar becomes mysterious and the unknown feels normal and we can listen to this one all day trying to make those distinctions.

Edition of 500 copies with jaw-droppingly amazing black and white collage artwork by Copeland, screenprinted by VG Kids.

1. Don't Feed The Animals
2. Devil Dance
3. I Can Never Relax
4. I'm So Bored

After turning in a wall-shaking remix of Essaie pas last year, Romanian production duo Khidja present their first EP for DFA. These four tracks are deep, spooky heaters – think John Carpenter in the club, with industrial basslines, frenetic melodies careening a bit out of control, and vocals echoing from the corners of the room. Their signature throb that runs along all four tracks, influenced by their time spent in underground scenes in Bucharest, London, and Berlin, as well as an emphasis on the jagged sounds of hardware.

Having established themselves with previous releases on labels like Hivern Discs and Malka Tuti, Khidja get darker, dubbier, and more twisted on In The Middle Of The Night. We find the record in the witching hour, and the tracks represent the cycle of nighttime mentalities, revealing the various directions the mind can wander in the place between consciousness and unconsciousness – mania, paranoia, even boredom. It all makes for a raucous dancefloor experience, with the duo bringing something new and heavy to the DFA roster.

Each Other - Be Nice To Each Other 12"

$14.98

Side A: Same As It Never Was / Burn It Down
Side B: Six Weeks
Justin Strauss and Max Pask have joined up to form a new project called Each Other, with their playful self-titled EP ‘Be Nice To Each Other’.

The EP finds Each Other creating an eclectic range of sounds in the space of just three tracks. The opener ‘Same As It Never Was’ is the most immediate of the set, becoming more hypnotic as the minimalist topline buries itself into your subconscious. The downtempo ‘Burn It Down’ then darkens the mood, feeling closer to a dystopian sci-fi soundtrack than an underground club classic, before the playful and progressive ‘Six Weeks’ up the energy with jittering beats, sparkling synths and a cooly understated vocal.

Junto Club - Warm Me Up 12"

$13.00

Glasgow's Junto Club return with their second EP. In their own words...

This is the second in our planned trilogy of Junto Club EPs. If the first was the birth of the Junto Club, this is the middle-aged existential crisis.

We've followed the same ethos as the first EP, allowing the music to develop organically rather than being restricted by considerations of genre. Naturally, this was shaped by our experiences of the first EP.

While the first EP developed through our experimentation with new sounds behind closed doors, this EP was the result of our attempts to retrospectively understand those creations and the interpretations of others. These reflections were mixed with our reimagining of those discoveries and our experiences of their live performance.

Warm Me Up is not the same as the Junto Club EP because those virgin sessions can never be recreated. Nor should they be. This is the middle aged existential crisis of the Junto Club. And we hope you enjoy dancing to it.

Black Meteoric Star - Dominatron b/w Anthem 12"

$14.98

Black Meteoric Star is the latest project by longtime DFA alumni Gavin Russom. The project is inspired equal parts Euro-disco, wonky early electronic body music from America's Midwest and an always present fascination with the outer reaches of global psychedelic rock. Gavin Russom began the recordings for Black Meteoric Star sometime in 2006. It was at this time that Carl Craig remixed Delia Gonzalez & Gavin Russom's single "Relevee", making it one of the years biggest dance club anthems. Three vinyl 12" singles by Black Meteoric Star will be released on DFA Records with extended original versions in 2009 along with a full self-titled CD that edits and compiles all six singles. There will be an edition of 100 of each 12" hand stamped and accompanied by a series of posters also designed by Russom. These releases will follow a narrative line and the six pieces of music tell a story of clubbing and the long journey through the night and into the next day. In this project, Russom carries his ability to create rich sonic landscapes to the dance floor using minimal but intense arrangements and high-energy repetition.

The second single "Dominatron / Anthem" takes place after midnight. The animal energy encountered in "World Eater" is released and splits itself into female and male parts. This 12" is the story of their struggle for power over one another. "Dominatron" is the feminine side and "Anthem" is the masculine side. As in a possession ritual, each side appears and does its dance. Rhode Island native Gavin Russom now lives and works in Berlin. He has produced many remixes recently, including a new single by Croatian techno artist Petar Dundov, New York's avant garde duo Palms and a remix featured on the upcoming soundtrack for the remake of the movie Tron.

The first single "Death Tunnel" / "World Eater" tells the story of the personal entry into darkness. In "Death Tunnel" the rhythmic lines lose their edges as they repeat in a tense nature. We are driving forward fast and this somehow creates a particular kind of ecstasy. As in twilight, borders become unclear and the boundary between inner and outer becomes soft. Sounds like electronic waves connects the experience to the ocean, another vast, unknowable place of transformation. "World Eater" was created under circumstances such that even Gavin has no idea how many of the sounds were created. It has been said to suggest a panther prowling through the jungle, looking for prey. Considering the above, that seems appropriate enough. Rhode Island native Gavin Russom now lives and works in Berlin. He has produced many remixes recently, including a new single by Croatian techno artist Petar Dundov, New York's avant garde duo Palms and a remix featured on the upcoming soundtrack for the remake of the movie Tron.

DFA is pleased to announce a new 12” single by Ninos Du Brasil.

Ninos Du Brasil are Nicolò Fortuni and Nico Vascellari, an Italian percussion duo with a background in visual art. Through their aptitude with drumming, they are masters at fusing the seemingly disparate influences of punk, tribal techno, and batacuda, emerging with a sound that is truly singular. The project takes its rhythmic backbone from Brazilian carnival music, and the duo injects each track with the frothy attitude of punk and the shuffling dancefloor domination of techno.

Nico Vascellari had the following to say of these two tracks: “These two songs are meant to be poisonous and malignant, As if somebody had the idea of inviting us to a party between the bushes of Queimada Grande (Snake Island, Brazil.)”

“... it’s unclear who’s doing what. Some of the elements belong together, according to tradition, and some of them don’t; there’s a little thrill in the friction.” - New York Times

“It bears no baggage, no symbolism, no risky appropriation or titles, just a refined, focused dimension and a riveting set of textures that showcase the group’s intricate techniques, all of it imbued with their own menacing panache.” - Tiny Mix Tapes

“...humid, vibrant and intoxicating on one hand, dark, nightmarish and unforgiving on the other.” - Juno Download

Eric Copeland - Ms Pretzel 12"

$12.98

12" Vinyl EP in a picture sleeve featuring collaged artwork by Eric Copeland himself.

Ms Pretzel is a 4 track, 20-minute EP of brand new material by Eric Copeland (Black Dice, Terrestrial Tones). This is Eric’s return to DFA after the release of an acclaimed single on Ron Morelli’s underground dance juggernaut L.I.E.S., which followed his beloved 2013 album “Joke In The Hole”, his solo debut for DFA.

The music on Ms Pretzel most certainly continues to break new sonic ground, a process which has gradually unfolded over the last few years via many prior works on seminal underground labels such as Underwater Peoples, Escho, Post Present Medium, and Catsup Plate, among many others. Ms Pretzel takes Eric’s outsider fascination with 4/4 dance music and twists it yet again. It is the sound of Eric Copeland throwing a wobbly dance party in a junkyard. DFA could not be more excited to host this gritty event.

“If Copeland is interested in the conventions of clubland, it’s at the point where someone’s puking on their shoes outside the venue, a distant throb of bass beating into their brain through the brickwork.” - Pitchfork

“The rhythms might be recognisably house or hip-hop, but Copeland pulls and squeezes their structures like accordions.” - Resident Advisor

“Though constantly teetering on a knife’s edge - to be expected in such mental, syncopated mashups - this is wildly colourful and knowingly absurd music.” - The Quietus

$14.98

Limited edition of 600 light-green colored vinyl.

Shit Robot and DFA are psyched to release “Where It’s At” another in a long-running series of collaborations with the singer/comedian/television star Reggie Watts. Reggie Watts’ vocal performance runs the gamut of Chicago dance music history - from the gloom and melodrama of iconic label Wax Trax, to the jubilant choruses of Frankie Knuckles’ house anthems. But let’s not de-emphasize the solid instrumentation provided by Mr. Marcus ‘Shit Robot’ Lambkin – we’ve got that classic DFA bassline, claps, and bleeps and bloops aplenty – mixed and manipulated by none other than our own James Murphy. The flip features a remix by London producer Johnny Aux, who turns the track into a staticy, stripped down, raw Deep House banger, with hissing glimmers of icy cymbals peeking through the smog.

$12.98

Larry Gus releases another single from his DFA debut LP “Years Not Living”. This time it is the album’s  lead-off track, entitled “With All Your Eyes Look”.

There are 3 remixes as well as a gorgeous  If approaching the song from it’s literary roots and inspiration (Georges Perec’s “Life: A User’s Manual”) is all too much, the post modern take on straight up driving urgent & dramatic psychedelic rock music should be just sufficient. The song is a perfect summation of all the talents that make Larry Gus such a unique talent. The mathematical layering of musical elements both grandiose and minuscule combine to make one of the most engaging singles of the summer.

The single has been remixed by three quite diverse artists and producers: Cut Hands (William Bennett of White House fame), Black Deer (aka Willie Burns) & Tuff Sherm (aka Dro Carey). All tracks lean on the percussive and manic syncopations of the original track but spin it out into very unique and surprising directions.

Glasgow duo Ladies As Pimps, a.k.a. LAPS, make their DFA debut with the Who Me? EP. After first meeting each other in an analogue production course run by Green Door Studio several years ago, Lady Two Collars (Golden Teacher) and Sue Zuki (Organs of Love) have now refined their sound and produced one of the most focused and vital club singles to emerge from the Glasgow underground, with their unique and thoroughly danceable fusion of dub, house, and trip-hop.

“Who Me?” asks the question via a French-English narration, anchored by a hard-edged rhythm that assertively struts between percussive triplets and whizzing frequencies. “Ladybug” gets even more dubbed out, with arrangements that unfurl somewhere between Neneh Cherry, ESG, and early Tricky. “Who Me?” caught the ears of everyone from Ben UFO (who hosted LAPS live at XOYO and on Rinse FM) to Rihanna, who featured their music in her Savage x Fenty show at this year’s NYFW.

On remix duties, LA producer M. Geddes Gengras appears under the Duppy Gun alias, chopping the vocal track into a pleasantly disorienting remix. Vancouver-based D. Tiffany (Coastal Haze, Pacific Rhythm) and Melbourne up-and-comer Roza Terenzi collaborate on a stripped-back, high-energy take, while ANY WAYS, a.k.a. Tom Marshallsay (Golden Teacher, General Ludd) rounds out the EP, bringing it back to Glasgow.

“Who Me?” and “Ladybug” were originally released in July 2017 by MIC Records (London, UK). This EP is a co-release between MIC and DFA. Vinyl 12" launches January 25th.

1) Eric Copeland - Heads (Parris Remix)
2) Eric Copeland - Heads (RAMZi Remix)
3) Eric Copeland - 321 Contact (Lokier Remix)
4) Eric Copeland - Electric Mud (Gerry Read Remix)

After the success of last year’s Mixbone EP, we once again invite four dance music experimentalists to remix Eric Copeland. Where 2017’s Goofballs was the first album recorded in its entirety in Eric’s current home of Palma de Mallorca, Spain, and the result of countless hours spent working in the studio, last fall’s Trogg Modal Vol. 1 pushed his 'Freakbeat 4/4' agenda even further, with a sense of humor that bubbles over and out through the speakers. Rife with chunky percussive layers and tweaked loopy vocals, these frenzied, self-described “rippers” are practically designed to be remixed.

Parris (Trilogy Tapes, Hemlock) and RAMZi (RVNG, 12th Isle) both take on the singsongy rhythms of “Heads.” Parris’ take pares down the track, giving it room to glisten and expand, while RAMZi’s paddles along in a characteristically murky, laid-back manner. Lokier (Days Of Being Wild, Spirits) goes in for the jugular with an acidic rework of “321 Contact,” repurposing vocal samples as spooky EBM. Closing out the record is Gerry Read (Aus, Accidental Jnr), who pits the heavy stomp of “Electric Mud” against whizzing frequencies. Newfangled interpretations of tracks that were already out there to begin with.

XLNT - High Tide 12"

$14.98

Tracklist:
1) High Tide
2) High Tide (Secret Circuit)
3) High Tide (Dr. Dunks)

Christened High Tide after the sudden rising of the LA River basin during a particularly epic and rare rainfall, this cosmic slop funk jam was born from the minds of Devin Flynn (Pixeltan) and Eddie Ruscha (Secret Circuit), two individuals with a deep connection to Los Angeles tap water sources. While traipsing through the aisles of an Atwater Village bodega, the two mustered up a plan to create a rhythmic piece so delectable as to turn peoples’ heads inside out and pummel the senses with a wobbly Jah Wobble bass sound and a toy drum machine “no toy” style back beat. They figured if they laced it up with enough electronic scuzz, the masses would be sure to want to sip from its nectar.

When DFA got wind, it was all systems go, and from then on, all relevant parties knew that they should sit on the track for at least five years before it was released, otherwise the world at large would not be ready for it. The remixes are by Eddie himself, as Secret Circuit, and Dr. Dunks, AKA Eric Duncan, a fellow Angeleno (at least at heart). Eric and Devin rolled through the streets as small children, shredding curbs and tagging local ice cream trucks, so it was inevitable they would reconnect and jam on High Tide.

Devin Flynn is an animator, musician and teacher who has worked on projects like Gary Panter's web series Pink Donkey and the Fly and MTV2’s Wonder Showzen. He has previously released on DFA with Pixeltan, a trio—Flynn, Hisham Bharoocha of Black Dice, and singer Mika Yoneta—that recorded with The DFA at the label’s inception, creating two seminal singles. Eddie Ruscha is another DFA veteran, having remixed artists including Wolfram and Museum of Love. He has been making music for decades, as Secret Circuit and with a myriad of other aliases and collaborators, in addition to recording under his own name. He has released on labels like Beats in Space and Emotional Response, among others.
